Trauma Therapy

Trauma can leave us feeling fundamentally unsafe, unprotected, and unable to trust. It can be hard for us to be present because to survive we have learnt to fight, run away (flight), freeze, fawn, appease, comply, or dissociate.

My understanding of the impact of trauma, and how to work with it, has been deepened by my experience as an educator and trainer with Dublin Rape Crisis Centre.

When working with trauma, establishing a sense of safety — or helping my clients to feel "safer" — is where we begin. This often involves learning about and paying attention to our nervous systems and the brain-body connection.

It is also about learning to feel safe in relationships, how to identify and express our boundaries, and how to trust ourselves, and access compassion for all our parts — a concept drawn from Internal Family Systems (IFS), a model that informs my work and understands each part of us as carrying its own feelings, roles, and wisdom.
